About the North Vancouver Outdoor School Alumni
Society
Since 1986, the North Vancouver Outdoor School Alumni
Society has worked tirelessly to encourage and support
environmental and cultural education at the North Vancouver
Outdoor School. As a registered charity, the NVOSAS works
to ensure that the educational programs of the Outdoor
School are universally available to all, regardless of
financial need.
NVOSAS members work diligently to develop partnerships
which make these mandates possible. Over time, NVOSAS
members have developed partnerships with such community
minded organizations as: Canada Trust Friends of the
Environment Foundation, Vancity Savings, Mountain Equipment
Co-op, Lions Clubs, and the merchants and citizens of
Squamish and the North Shore.
The programs supported by these partnerships include:
* Outdoor School for Kids Bursary Fund: ensuring that no
child is denied access to the NVOS for financial reasons.
In the last five years over $100,000 has been raised for
this purpose.
* Scholarship Fund: most of the volunteers at the NVOS are
high school students. This fund will aid some in their
pursuit of post secondary studies. Last year a total of
$5,000 was awarded.
* Community Events: the Alumni supports many community
events including the NVOS Open House, North Shore Coho
Festival and Canada Day celebrations.
* Counsellor Training: Alumni members are actively involved
in planning and implementing training programs for the
Outdoor School’s many talented volunteers.
Membership in the Alumni Society is free and is open to any
individual who has an interest in, or wishes to be involved
with, the activities of the NVOS Alumni Society or the
NVOS. Our membership currently stands at 325 members.
